The Greeks created Greek Mythology. They created the myths from fear. They were afraid of weather so the Greeks created Zeus, god of the sky.
The Greeks made up Greek mythology to explain stuff. The myths came about by fear. The Greeks were afraid of the weather so they made Zeus. They wanted to believe that there was a life after death so they came up with Hades and the Underworld. They were scared of earthquakes and the ocean so out popped Poseidon. The list goes on...

Most ancient societies needed a creation myth to explain the creation of the world and the Greek myths fulfilled this role for the ancient Greeks. They also helped to explain natural phenomena such as the passage of the sun across the sky, storms, thunderbolts, thunder and lightning, plagues, failed crop harvests and so on before modern science provided the true explanations.

They were most likely created for the same reasons that Native American stories were created. That was to explain how or why certain things came to be. Plus, they became wondrous tales to tell from generation to generation. (i.e. Odysseus, Heracles, etc.)

Answer 1 The Greek gods were created by Zeus the king of gods and the queen of gods Hera. The Greek people believed in gods before science.

.

Answer 2 The early gods were created in the imagination of men (and women no doubt!) to try and explain everyday happenings. What causes thunder? What causes an earthquake/volcano/tidal wave? Why does food spoil and so on and so on. This soon leads to actually believing in the gods and trying to appease them so as to avoid danger. This style of thinking falls under the heading of 'belief systems' and as long as they do no real harm, they may be tolerated.

See there were a variety of ways they were born or created for that matter see zues was the son of the Titans Kronos and Rhea was going to be consumed by Kronos Because profit had said that one of Kronos's own children would overthrow him He had been successful at swallowing Hades,Poseidon, and Hera but Rhea could not stand to see another of her precious children be swallowed so she had wrapped up a rock some (special) potion and gave to Kronos once kronos barfed up Hades,Posedion, and Hera so that started the great war between Olympians and the Titans the Greek gods prevaled and locked the Titans away in Tartarus a section of Erebus (or as we know it the underworld) never to be released. Then the Major gods were created and Hera and Zues Bore many children. And also Athena sprang from Zues's head fully suited in Armor so I hoped I answered your Question.

No one really knows when it started. The first written record of Greece is the Iliad. It begins with Homer and it is believed to be not earlier than a thousand years before Christ.
