Eh, depends on what you did. Philosophers had it pretty good - they could stand around and pontificate, and anyone who was impressed would give them food and money. However, unless you were rich, powerful, and a male, it wasn't all that great. There were no retirement benefits, because you were expected to die on the job. You frequently did. Perhaps you joined the Army to see the world. You frequently died somewhere else, then. Although "slavery" as you might define it was not a common as elsewhere, there were basically two classes of people - the rich land-owners (about 2% of the population) and the street people (about 98%). Yeah, there was a small merchant class selling stuff to the rich people, but most Greeks had it pretty tough. Muscle power got nearly everything done, and if you've ever mixed a batch of mortar for the Parthenon, you'll know all about sore and achey muscles, and no Advil in the world will help.
