The Ancient Order of Druids was founded in 1781 by a gentleman named Henry Hurle, who was a master builder and possibly a Freemason. The first meeting took place at the Kings Arms public house in Poland Street, which is off Oxford Street in London, on 28th November of that year. The pub still bears a commemorative plaque to that effect, although the A.O.D no longer meets there. The Ancient Order of Druids still has Lodges throughout the South and Midlands which meet on a regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis, depending on the preference of the Lodge concerned. The Ancient Order of Druids is a non-political, non-religious society, devoted to the well-beingof its members and families, charitable persuits and friendship. Membership is restricted to men only, and prospective new members are always welcome. There are no membership qualifications, although smart dress and good behaviour are expected of all members.
