The Nile river flows north, so anyone traveling southward would be moving against the current.
Egyptians grew crops such as wheat, barley, vegetables, figs, melons, pomegranates and vines. They also used to grow flax, but it became less of a need for area people so they stopped growing it.
The river Nile flooded, depositing a rich layer of silt on the agricultural areas left and right of the river banks.
