Abydos was located in ancient Egypt, above the first cataract (waterfall) of the nile. Its symbol was a hill, surmounted by two feathers. It was the 8th nome of Ancient Egypt.

Successively from the first dynasty to the twenty-sixth dynasty, nine or ten temples were built on one site at Abydos. But Seti I, one of the least well known pharaohs, commissioned the construction of a grand temple in Abydos, to the South of the others. Seti I's temple to Osiris is still standing.
