There are several ways in which a catapult works.

A ocounterweight catapult works by droping a weight strafed to a boom, while the thboom acts like a giant lever. The projectile builds up momentum at the other end (usually in a sling or cup). At the apex of the swing, the projectile is released to travel in a ballistic trajectory.

Tortion machines (onager, balista, scorpion) use a twisted bundle of rope(skein) to push the boom foreward. this method generates surprising amounts of power.

catupults are made by using weights on the bottom than using a long narrow stick to launch

Catapult is a somewhat generic term referring to a number of different machines.

A Trebuchet has a large throwing arm with a pivet near one end mounted up high. On the short end of the throwing arm is a weight, either firmly attached directly to the arm, or in a hanging basket. On the long end of the arm is a sling, which greatly increases range and power.

A Manganol or Onager has a throwing arm often with a sing at one end; the other end is mounted between twisted ropes; the twisted ropes provide the power.

A ballista looks like a giant crossbow mounted sidewise, with a track extending back to hold a massive bolt or rock. It may opperate similar to a bow, in which the arms are bent back; or it may have two arms mounted in twisted rope.

The catapult was made as a response to large fortifications and castle walls. It allowed very large objects to be fired from great distances in an attempt to bring down defenses.
