There were and are many cities by this name, of course, but THE city of Alexandria is located in Northern Egypt, between Lake Mareotis & the Mediterranian; today still a major port with a population of over 3-million. Although there was a city/harbor there (Pharos) from early on in ancient Egyptian history, the location was picked by Alexander the great (c. 356-323 BCE) to be the site of his new capital after he made Egypt part of his Empire; the renaming/rebuilding begun by his general, Ptolemy (who's lienage became the last paronic dynasty of Egypt; ending with the famous Cleopatra & Egypt then comming under Roman rule). At that time, it was the most sophicticated & cosmopolitan city in the Mediterranian (perhaps the world) and the premier center of culture & learning; having a then guesstimated population of perhaps 1-million. It was legendary for its fabulous Lighthouse & other great wonders, but most renowned for its Great Library, where "all the World's knowledge" was said to be available. Alas, all this was tragically lost with the decline of Rome; religious fanatics burned the Library, an earthquake toppled the Lighthouse, etc. The city was finally rebuilt/refashioned by its Musilum/Arab conquors to become the city we know there today; however, today's city has virtually no resemblence to nor anything in common with the Classical era metropilis...

In my opinion Alexander of Macedon was most remembered in Egypt for founding the city of Alexandria; the cultural center of the ancient world, and the first ancient library.
