Psyche was tasked with retrieving water from the river Styx by Aphrodite, who gave her a crystal urn in which to place the water. Upon climbing the high mountain where Aphrodite told her to go, Psyche dispaired at the sight of the River, which was in a narrow chasm, with monstrous serpents reaching out from the chasm walls. She was on the verge of suicide, when the Eagle of Zeus appeared overhead, and swooped down. The Eagle told her that she would never be able to accomplish the task herself, and that he would help her out. He took the urn from her, and used his agility to evade the serpents, and scoop up the water of the Styx for her.
She did not. Cupid saved her from drinking the water from Styx.
