Egypt had been occupied for short periods by the Assyrians, Persians (525-405BCE)and then by the Greeks (332-30BCE). The big takeover came with the Romans in 30BCE when Octavian (the emperor Augustus) defeated an alliance between Mark Anthony and Cleopatra. This the end of what we call ancient Egypt.

The Romans stayed until 395Ce. The Byzantine Roman Empire took over and were ousted by Moslem Arabs in the 7th century CE. In 1517 Egypt became a province of the Turkish (Ottoman) empire which lasted until 1798 when Napoleon occupied the country. After his defeat by the British in 1801 he left and it returned to nominal Ottoman rule heavily influenced by French and British interests. British rule proper did not start until 1882 and lasted until the 1950's.
