Charon is Hades' ferryman. He ferries dead souls across the river Acheron but only if they were properly burned or buried and if they pay him a coin, otherwise called an obulus. Those who are not properly burned or buried, or are not admitted by Charon, are doomed to wander the banks of Styx for a hundred years. Living persons who wish to go to the underworld need a golden bough obtained from the Cumaean Sibyl. Charon is also one of Pluto's moons.
CHARON is the grisly immortal ferryman who brings dead souls (or at least those who could pay the fee) across the River Styx to the Underworld.

Charon is the ferryman of the River Styx. He ferries souls of the dead across the river to be judged. All passengers had to produce a coin (an obulus or danake) in order to gain passage. Those that didn't have the coin, or were left unburied, were left to wander the shores of the Styx for a hundred years.
