However, after this, the Romans started gaining the upper hand and regained control of Italy and Hannibal was forced to spend the last four years of his campaign in Italy on the easily defensible mountains of Calabria, the toe of Italy. The Romans then brought the war near Carthage in Tunisia and Hannibal was recalled to fight there. He was defeated in the last battle of the war, the Battle of Zama, by the Roman general Scipio Africanus.
Hannibal was a very intelligent general and used war elephants to attack Rome. Rome had never seen this before, so they were scrambled. even though he had the advantage in war forces, Rome still remained victorious.
