the hoplites were used by the ancient Greeks and there amour was very expensive which meant that if you were poor you could not be a hoplite. they held there shield on there left arm which protected their left side and he person next to thems right side. they used spears and/or swords. they were very well trained to fight because if one person got scared and left the line the formation would break or if they went out of step ect ect.
The very well trained applies to few of the Greek cities,Spartans on the first place.Other were not that well trained unless they were rich enough to afford a personal hoplomachos,or a trainer in the art of warfare.
