The ancient Greeks were the people of Greece and who migrated from Greece to other parts of the Mediterranean, including Cyprus, Crete, Asia Minor, Sicily, and especially Southern Italy, where they carried on Greek culture. They spoke a language that was, and is, its own branch of the Indo-European Languages. They were important in the development of politics, law, philosophy, mathematics, and a host of other intellectual pursuits. They were profoundly influential on European culture.
There were several distinct clearly important periods in ancient Greek history, the first being the Mycenaean civilization, which lasted from about 1600 to 1100 BC, and the second being classical Greece, from had its origins in about 800 BC, and its flowering from about 500 to the death of Alexander the great in 323 BC. This was followed by the Hellenistic Era, when Greek influence produced Hellenistic empires and Kingdoms in Egypt and Asia. Finally, Greece was conquered by the Romans, became the center of the East Roman Empire, and developed into the medieval Roman Empire, which we call the Byzantine Empire today.
