The Athenians at Marathon had a council of 10 generals with each general taking overall command for a day. As there was a stand off between the Athenians and the Persians for a number of days the overall command passed from one general to the other.

However, it was the general Miltiades who was most eager to attack. He made his case to the council and the vote was carried by the most senior general Callimachus in favour of Miltiades proposal.

After the vote the other generals agreed to give Miltiades overall tactical command although Callimachus commanded the right wing of the line, traditionally the most important position. Unfortunately Callimachus died in the fighting.

The Persian commanders were Datis and Artaphernes who were helped by the former dictator of Athens, Hippias, who wanted to regain control of the city.
