The Ten Commandments are important because they are the laws God handed down to Moses on Mt. Sinai. The Old Testament had over 600 laws, but after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Ten Commandments in the New Testament were the new laws for us to live by.

the difference between the ten commandments also known as the Hebrew's code and the laws of other peoples like the Greeks and Romans is that the Ten commandments are ten laws given by God send by Moses while the Hebrew code giving by Jewish laws. The laws of the Romans and the Greeks were secualar.

The Israelites, during the time Moses was up on the mountain receiving God's commandments. They became impatient and anxiety ridden and wanted something tangible to worship.
Both share a sort of "common morality" that does not allow for murder, theft and so on. The main difference is that the Ten Commandments were written to enforce a monotheistic religion, so dissuaded practices that they called "idolatry", i.e. the worship of statues, other deities e.t.c. The Romans and Greeks both followed polytheistic religions where what the Jews considered idolatry was widely practiced.
