Ancient Greek houses (oikos) were designed for particular reasons. There was a courtyard in the middle of the house to get some sun and air; especially for the women as they were banned from leaving the oikos and to get a breeze into the rooms. There were small windows in the rooms to cool them and the people inside them. The women's quarters (gynaikon) were upstairs to stop the temptations of cheating and curiosity. The men's quarters (andron) were downstairs for easy access to outside the oikos for lavish male parties (symposium). There was an altar in the courtyard to give your offerings personally. A well was in the courtyard to provide the family with their own personal water.
It was known as "Quartering". Homeowners would be required to quarter- that is, provide quarters for a given number of soldiers in their homes.
