Most of the garments worn by the Egyptians were made from linen fibers which were made from the flax plant. These clothes would be a pale colored cloth that would eventually get bleached by the hot sun in Egypt.

This often happens when Muslims go to hajj. Please see the Related Question: Why do Muslims wear white to Hajj?

The white robe or thawb (ثوب‎) -- also called deshdaasha (دشداشة) -- is a common male garment in the Arabian Peninsula, but it is a custom of local dress. Muslims outside of Arabia (like Indo-Pak Muslims or Indonesian Muslims) generally do not wear thawb.

Ancient Egyptians wore clothing made of linen, which is naturally light-colored. Keeping clothing white and clean was a sign of wealth, so it was fashionable to bleach linens.
