The Dark Age was from the12th to the 9th Century BCE because the Mycenaean civilisation had been swallowed up in invaders - the Dorians and the Sea Peoples.It was followed by the Archaic Period 776-480 BCE, then the Classical Period.
Mainly because it is the period of which we have no contemporary documentation. So we are 'left in the dark' as to most of the developments in that prehistoric era and have to rely on a few archeological finds and the (usually highly untrustworthy and glorified) stories on those times written only 400 years or more later.
