We have records from ancient writers describing it and of it's destruction by an earthquake in 226 BCE, 56 years after its erection. It snapped at the knees and fell to the ground, broken. Historians Strabo and Pliny the Elder gave a description of the remains, which lay there for 800 years and were a tourist attraction before being broken up and the metal content pillaged.
