You're right all mares can have foals. But not every owner whats their mare to have foals. Mares that have owners that what them to have foals are called broodmares. Mares that are not going to be used for breeding purposes are just called mares.
The leading stallion will breed with the mares
Wild horse stallions obviously remain with their mares...a domestic stallion can potentially remain with his mare's year round as well. Only the stallion owner can determine whether this is a viable husbandry alternative.
A stallion can breed anywhere from 1 to over a 100 mares per season live cover. Properly managed stallions using AI (artificial insemination) can impregnate even more mares per year. In the wild a stallion can have as few as 1 to 20 mares. Herd size controlled by how many mares the stallion can protect from other males.
Crackerjack. Wicked.
In the wild horses live in herds. Herds consist of mares that are usually related, and one stallion. The alpha mare keeps everyone in line including the stallion. This one male will keep this band of mares until he either dies or is chased off by a stronger stallion. Young males are ejected from the herd and can find their own mares or hang with other bachelors. This prevents inbreeding.
Domestic mares and geldings aren't very territorial, wild horses being animals who roam. They are more concerned about other horses like their offspring, or in a stallion's case, his mares.
