The Carthaginians were one of Rome's first great enemies and almost destroyed Rome in the Punic Wars under their great general Hannibal. Also, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt was an enemy of Rome due to her seducing Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. The Persian and Parthian empires of the east were big enemies of Rome as were the many barbarians that the Romans conquered or tried to. The Huns, the Vandals, the Franks, the Saxons, the Angles, the Jutes, the Visigoths, and the Ostrogoths were all barbarian enemies of Rome, as were the Gauls and Celts.
