In the late 19th century, a number of versions of these paintings, carvings, and prints were done specifically to depict the verses from the hymn, Rock of Ages, by Toplady where it says, "Nothing in my hands I bring; only to Thy cross I cling." These images were also printed on postcards. Some of the painters are known; others are not.
