the subject matter of realist painters is what they work or paint about.
He mostly drew undetailed figures and buildings.

Art focused on Religious ideas until Humanism came along and the artists started painting things about how they viewed the world Edit: In the early Renaissance, they focused on what the person said above more but not that much with religious subject matter. In the High Renaissance however, subject matter is seen in many of the artworks as they were papal patronages and the artists had to paint religious matter. They focused of the idealised and universal idea of man (man is created in the image of god), Ancient Greek and Roman ideas; philosophy, art, architecture, etc. And also, artworks like the Sistine Chapel was commissioned because the Pope and Catholic Church was under attack from Martin Luther and the Reformation.
