from wikipedia
"It is a concept in medieval and ancient philosophy referring to the capricious nature of Fate. The wheel belongs to the goddess Fortuna, who spins it at random, changing the positions of those on the wheel - some suffer great misfortune, others gain windfalls. Fortune appears on all paintings as a woman, sometimes blindfolded, "puppeteering" a wheel."

I think Audrey Flack's "Wheel of Fortune" is a very interesting painting. I chose it for a school project.
The painting was done in 1520 by the artist Titian who lived during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries from 1477 until 27 August 1576 and shows cupid with his hand upon a wheel Fortune wheels have been used in their various itterations throughout history. They represent what we might call luck or chance. Cupid was the greek god of love, represented in many paintings and sculptures as a cherub wielding a shortbow. You could speculate that the reason for cupid to be portrayed next to a fortune wheel is because some people are fortunate in love while others are not. In this painting Cupid with his wheel is really asking you "Do you feel lucky, punk?"
