Frederic Auguste Bartholdi designed it, and important engineering was done by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. The surface of the statue, called its skin, was made of beaten copper by craftsmen in France. It erected in New York, with construction on the foundation beginning in 1883, and it was dedicated on October 28,1886.
