What advantage was the Confederacy missing that might have turned the war in its favor

They were missing official recognition by the British and French, which might have happened, until Lincoln skillfully deflected it by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Confederacy was missing a number of important things and even so, it still had a chance.

  • The South was missing more of an industrial base than it had;
  • An alliance with Great Britain would have let the South go "free". Depending of course on the degree of commitment.
  • A larger civilian population with which to bring into the army.

Why did Lincoln announce early in the Civil War that he would not free enslaved people

He wanted to avoid war and keep the nation together. He tried to compromise, thinking he could find a peaceful way to prevent war and secession. When he realized that war was inevitable, and it would be violent and bloody, he decided that the post war United States of America should be a free nation with no slaves. That the deaths and killing in the Civil War should be for a purpose, and to end slavery in the USA once and for all.
