Definition1/5
The loss of approximately 620,000 soldiers borders on being the
most costly loss of lives then most of America's losses in all wars
fought by the US combined. The figures on this can vary, however,
there is no doubt that the Civil War losses were huge compared to
any other single war the US was involved in. Also, there is no
dispute that the loss of lives in the Battle of Antietam, of
approximately 25-27,000 casualties is the largest number in one day
then in any other battle. The numbers are even more shocking when
the populations, North and South in 1861- 1865, combined totaled
some 32,000,000 people. In World War Two, with Americans fighting
on two fronts, faced with death machines such as air plane bombers,
tanks, machine guns, submarines and battleships, the American
losses were about 405,000 between 1941 to 1945.
