It was the second largest empire antiquity saw and the 16th largest in history.

The Roman Empire covered the following present day countries or parts of present day countries:
Western Europe: Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland south of the River Rhine, Germany west of the River Rhine and southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Britain.
South-eastern Europe: Hungary west of the River Danube, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, the Republic of Macedonia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, and part of Moldova.
Western Asia: Turkey, Cyprus, northern Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Palestine, and a slither of the coast of Saudi Arabia on the northern part of the Red Sea.
Africa: Egypt, coastal Libya, Tunisia, coastal Algeria and Northern Morocco.
