Genoa became a wealthy because it was one of the Italian Sea republics (Venice, Genoa and Pisa). These republics built fleets and traded with the Byzantines and the Arabs in the eastern Mediterranean. Their trading links also reached India and China. They imported luxury goods from the orient (spices, incenses, perfumes, silk and other textiles which were expensive at the time, such as cotton and linen) and exported them to the rest of Europe.
