First and foremost they got clean. However the baths were more than a bunch of tubs, they were social and recreational centers. They had exercise facilities, Swimming Pools, libraries, game rooms, hairdressers, barbers, food vendors, massage parlors and some had shops along the outside.

The cold or cool room had water directly from the aqueducts, the warm or hot rooms had their water heated by the hypocaust system. That's the basics. Other amenities included, massage rooms, hairdressers, libraries, exercise areas, snack shops and social centers for Board Games and gossip.
