The main part of the Roman army was the LEGION. This was made up of about 5000 men under the command of the LEGATE.

The legion was divided into about ten COHORTS, each of which was made up of 6 CENTURIES. The centuries were commanded by a centurion. The century once had a hundred men in it, which is how it got its name. However, later there were only about 60-80 men in each century.

CENTURIONS
The centurions were very importnat men in the Roman Legions. They were responsible for training the soldiers under their command and for making sure everyone obeyed their orders. Some centurions were noted for their cruel treatment of the legionaries.

STANDARDS
Each century had its own emblem or STANDARD. This was carried out by the century's standard bearer, a very experienced and trusted soldier. All the legions also had an imperial standard, which was an eagle. This was carried by the legionary standard bearer. For a legion to lose its eagle in battle was a great disgrace.

roman armies were organised in the following way and has inspire armies today to have units similar to this. eight men were in a conterberni, these eight men shared a tent together, and a room at a fort. there were 10 conterbernies in a century, a unit of 80 men commanded by a centurion and his second in command an optio and a standard bearer who carried the century's flag. there were 6 centuries in a cohort, a unit of 480 men commanded by a senior centurion. there 9 normal cohorts of 480 men in each one and then the 1st cohort in every legion ( a unit of 5000 men). the first cohort containe 900 men, which werent all soldiers, these extra men werent all soldiers, these extra men cooks clerks and medics.
