"Rome" as we know it, began in 510 BCE as the Roman Republic, which was replaced eventually in 27 BCE after years of civil war.

The traditional date place for the end of Rome was 476 AD, but that is not even very accurate since the Empire continued on in the East at the capital Constantinople.

The Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire (as it came to be known) ended in 1453 AD.
