The cereal grains, oats, rye, barley and wheat, were important. Root vegetables were grown and stored over winters. Fruit was grown and eaten fresh, dried, or made into wine or cider. Cabbage family plants were grown, as were peas and fava beans. Fresh greens, such as lettuce, were grown. Certain spices and seasonings were grown in Europe, most importantly mustard.

Crops varied across Europe, but in England the varieties grown were:

  • Six-row barley (Hordeum vulgare)
  • Bread Wheat/Club Wheat (Triticum aestivocompactum)
  • Oats (Avena sativa)
  • Rivet wheat (Triticum turgidum)
  • Rye (Secale cereale)
  • Spelt wheat (Triticum spelta)
  • Flax seed (Linum usitatissimum)

In some cases all these would be grown together in the same plots of land, producing "mixed grain" or maslin flour when ground up at the mill - the bread produced was also known as maslin.

Other crops included hemp and an assortment of vegetables and fruits.

Vegetables included field beans, peas, beets, turnips, swedes, radish, parsnip, lentils, leeks, onions, garlic, fennel, carrot and wild carrot, cabbage, asparagus and celery. A wide range of herbs were also grown.

There were no potatoes, tomatoes, maize, runner beans or other foods native to the Americas.
