The word lorimer derives from Anglo-Norman French lorein, lorain, loreyn (spelling is typically variable) meaning a harness strap or horse bridle. A lorimer or lorymeris a man who made any or all parts of horse harness including metal bits, buckles, decorative mounts, stirrups, spurs and so on.

Throughout the medieval period, expensive horse harness for wealthy nobles always included decorative pendants in a wide variety of shapes - these represent the pinnacle of the lorimer's skill. 12th century examples are square, rectangular, round, lozenge-shaped, cruciform or shield shaped and between 3.5 and 6 cms tall, with an integral loop at the top. They are of bronze or other copper alloy, often gilded and enamelled with a design (from about 1150 often an heraldic design). Such pendants hung from the horse's breast-strap.
