A Roman father had to acknowledge the child as his own. There is a rumor that the newborn would be laid at the father's feet and if the dad picked it up he considered it his child. This may be just myth or "Hollywood History". No ancient writer mentions this action, but to be fair, the ancient writers were not overly concerned with domestic life.

The father also had the option of rejecting the child by saying "it is not to be fed". Augustus did this with his great-grandchild. If the father rejected the baby, it was either starved to death or exposed, or given away to someone who wanted it.
