The Roman government provided first of all protection for the people against raids by barbarians. In addition the conquered peoples were governed by Roman law and some of them received Roman citizenship along with its rights. A higher standard of living was another benefit, due to clean water, organized cities and towns, and good roads which made travel and trade easier.
