They played with marbles and balls but if they couldn't afford that they played with round nuts. They also threw dice made of bone. They even blew up pig bladders - like balloons - to play football with! Roman children also played with see saws and the boys sometimes played with wooden swords.

The poor Romans played the same games as the wealthy Romans although their gaming materials may not be as fancy or elaborate. There was always a ball handy and knucklebones and dice were popular among both rich and poor. They had several types of dice games, one called "tropa" was both a game of chance and skill as three dice were used and the player tried to toss them into a narrow necked jar. Only the dice that entered the jar were counted in the player's score.

Would poor Romans be slaves?

No. A poor Roman was a poor Roman, nothing more. The only way a poor Roman citizen could become a slave was to voluntarily sell himself into slavery.
