Many historians date the beginning of the Middle Ages to the Fall of Rome in 476 AD.

There are a few problems with the date 476.

First of all, some historians date the beginning of the Middle Ages to the year 1000 AD, 1066 AD, or some other date in the 10th or 11th century; these people refer to the period of 476 to 1000 as the Dark Ages.

The next problem is that Rome did not fall in 476. What did happen was a bit more complicated than a simple fall of a government. The Senate, for example, continued to function in Italy until the 7th century, and the eastern half of the Roman Empire, which we now call the Byzantine Empire, continued to exist for nearly another thousand years.

Finally, a number of dates are used for the start of the Middle Ages, including 380, 410, 476, 480, 498, 500, and 518, along with a number of other dates. The different dates are used according to one reason or another. For example, the year 380 is used because it is the date Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire; 518 is used by people who mark the Middle Ages as starting with the reign of the Roman Emperor Justin I.

One answer:

The fall of the Roman empire in 410 AD.

A different Answer:

The territory of the West Roman Empire was taken over as a series of Germanic kingdoms were set up in its provinces. This process, which began in about 350 and ended in about 610, caused the collapse of Roman authority referred to as the fall of the Roman Empire, or more correctly, of West Roman Empire.

Most historians giving a year for the fall of the Roman Empire use 476 AD, and use that for the beginning of the Middle Ages. (The city of Rome was sacked in 410 by Visigoths, but they left after three days, and the government, which was in Ravenna, the capital at the time, continued to operate.)

But the empire also did not simply fall in 476. The Senate of the West Roman Empire continued to function at least until 603, and in fact the Byzantine Empire, which was the medieval continuation of the Roman Empire, continued to operate with a government in Constantinople almost for another thousand years. (The Byzantine Empire was always referred to as the Roman Empire until the term Byzantine Empire was invented for it in the 16th century to distinguish it from the ancient Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire).

Did the middle ages contribute to the modern world?

Well I see it as the bridge between the ancient and modern worlds, because of all the advances in architecture, agriculture, and techonoloy in this period of time. All of these things led to or had something to do with all of things we have today. We didn't have these advances during the ancient world, and we have made major advances since then, so it's in the middle. Thus the name, the middle ages.

What events marked the end of the Middle Ages?

There is no one single event that marks the end of the middle ages, but there are many events and movements, cultural, religious, economic, and political, that mark the end and the start toward modern times. In general, these events center broadly around the year 1500. In 1453 Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks. This was the start of Ottoman advance into southeast Europe. It also displace many Greek scholars, some of which ended up in Italy and stimulated the Italian Renaissance, which challenged many of Europe's scientific and cultural ideas. In 1519 the protestant reformation started, ending the hegemony of the Catholic church over religious life in Europe. Economically, patterns of farming and land holding changed with the enclosure movement, resulting in the degradation of the old manor system and open field farming. Monarchs started to consolidate their power at this point, converting the old feudal structure to the starts of centralized monarchies. 1492 marked Columbus's first journey to the new world, as the Age of Discovery and contact with the new world began. Europe began the process of interacting with the wider world on a much wider scale. The seeds of overseas empire were planted. Printing developed in the middle of the 15th century greatly expanded the availability of books and starting an increase in literacy, which helped fuel cultural changes and advances in the the sciences and humanities. All of these events and others marked the end of the middle ages.

Who is the roman god who's temple gates were seldom closed?

It was the temple of Janus. Its doors were open in time of war, and closed in time of peace. Janus was the god of beginnings and transitions and, therefore, of gates, doors, doorways, passages and endings, and was associated with births, and journeys. He presided over the beginning and end of conflict and though this, war and peace. He looked to the future and the past and was therefore depicted with two faces. The month of January (Ianuarius) was named after him. Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The doors of his temple were open in time of war, and closed to mark the peace. A
