All the accruements of civilization fell along with the fall of Rome in Europe. People were being invaded by various groups and it was a major job to stay alive. There was no protection, no repair of roads or any of the infrastructure of the towns. Europe entered the period of time called the Dark Ages which lasted from about 410 to roughly 700. However, much of the classic literature was preserved in the monasteries and education continued for small groups in various locations.
