476 CE is commonly accepted as the end of the Roman Empire. At this point, Romulus Augustus lost the position of emperor, and the Germanic leaders who had been the true behind-the-scenes rulers of Rome for many years finally became the ceremonial leaders as well. It is ironic that Romulus Augustus was the final Roman emperor (in the Western Empire) because he shares the name of two great founders of Rome- Romulus, the mythical founder of Rome, raised by a wolf, and Augustus, the first emperor.
