Early Roman culture was influenced by the Greeks, Etruscans and Sabines. The influence of the Etruscans and Sabines faded as their civilisations decayed and they became latinised. Greek influence, instead, became stronger.

The Greeks and the Etruscans

These two group influenced Roman culture, but they were not connected to the origin of Roman culture. Rome was said have been, at the time of its founder Romulus, a fusion of Latins and Sabines. The Sabine were said to have attacked Rome, but made peace and settled of two or Rome's hills, the Quirinal and Viminal. Titus Tatius, the Sabine king co-ruled with Romulus for 5 years. The second king, Numa Pompilius, was a Sabine from the Sabine city of Cures. He consolidated the foundation of the Roman state and created the institutions of state religion, injecting Sabine elements into it. The 4th king was also a Sabine. Some patrician clans claimed Sabine origins.

Who were the decendants of Rome's earliest settlers?

The first settlers were Latins who lived on the seven hills of Rome. The foundation of Rome was a union of these settlers under a king. It was also said to have also involved a fusion between the Latins of these hills and Sabines who had settlers on two of these hills There was also a legend that tried to establish the Romans as descendants of the Trojans, but that was just that, a legend.

How did life change between the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages?

It went from an organized society with a Roman government and services to chaos in 410 AD when Rome fell. In the early middle ages Vikings were invading and there was constant war. By the time of the high middle ages society and nobility was getting stronger and the church was taking control. William the Conqueror became king and the Magna Carta was signed. The late middle ages saw the 100 years war between France and England, the plague, the church was fighting, and new ideas grew. Exploration had begun.

Who does the Romans trace their origin?

The Romans traced their origins to the unification of separate settlements on what were to be the Seven Hills of Rome into a unified state under the rule of Romulus, Rome's founder and first king. The foundation was also said to have involved a fusion between Latins and some Sabines who settled on two of the seven hills. There was also a legend that had Romulus as a descendant of Ascanius who funded the Latin city of Alba Longa and its royal dynasty. He and his twin brother Remus were the sons of Rhea Silvia, the daughter of the deposed king of that city. Ascanius was the son of Aeneas, a legendary figure who was meant to have survived the Trojan War with the help of two gods and who landed in Latium (land of the Latins) and founded the Latin city of Lavinium. Therefore, the Romans claimed descent from the Trojans. However, this was based on legend. In reality the Latins were not related to the Trojans. The legend of Aeneas served to bridge a 400-year gap between the date of the foundation of Rome and the date of the Trojan War.
