the roman emperors, in all its istory had 3 types of bodyguards; the Praetorian guard, the German bodyguards and the Varanguian guard.
The praetorian guard guarded not only the emperor but Rome as well, but since their loyallty was not good, the emperors created the German bodyguards who acted as more personal bodyguards. they served the emperors as mercenaries until Emperor Vitellius disbanded them in 69a.D. Afterwards after the romn empire broke in 2 (east and west), the East side of the romn army hired the Varanguian guard in 1036 a.D. they consisted of anglo-saxons and Danes who did not like to be ruled by the Normans back in their own land. the Varanguian guard wa mostly known by their strong loyalty to the emperor.

The first Roman government was called the Roman Kingdom. According to legend, the Trojan hero Aeneas, son of Venus, fled from Troy and landed on the west coast of Italy, where he settled. His descendants ruled that part of Italy as Kings of Alba Longa, named after the city from which they ruled. Many generations later, the King of Alba Longa named Numitor had a daughter named Rhea Silvia, who became a Vestal Virgin. She soon broke her vow of chastity by having twin boys with Mars, the god of war. These boys, Romulus and Remus, were raised by a she-wolf, and founded a city on the banks of the Tiber River. Romulus then killed Remus and named the city after himself, calling it Rome. Romulus and his descendants were monarchs of the Roman Kingdom. In the Sixth Century B.C. the monarchy was abolished, and replaced with the Roman Republic, which expanded rapidly across the Mediterranean.

The emperors of the Roman empire (the so-called Eastern and Western parts) were the men who ruled. For the names of specific emperors and the times that they ruled, type "Roman emperors" into your browser and you will come up with several websites that will give you lists of their names.
The German guards of the Roma emperors were their personal bodyguards. Now, don't confuse them with the Praetorian Guard, which was also an imperial guard. The Praetorians had other duties as well as protecting Rome and the emperor.

The first Roman emperor was Augustus. However, there were more than 65 Roman emperors. Up to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire there were 91 emperors. The eastern part of the Roman Empire continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years after the fall of the western part and there were further 81 emperors. There were also 7 emperors of a short-lived breakaway part of the empire which historians have called the "Gallic Empire."
