Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, also known as Vespasian, was a Roman Emperor from AD 69 to 79. He seized power and founded the Flavian Dynasty following the civil wars spurred by the Emperor Nero's death.

Prior to becoming an emperor, Vespasian was one of the generals who invaded the south of England under the emperor Claudius. He was sent to take the south-west and pushed all the way to Cornwall. The emperor Nero sent him to suppress the Great Revolt of Judea and was successful until he left for Rome to take on the title of emperor. He left the continuation of the war to his sun Titus, who besieged and destroyed Jerusalem.

As emperor, Vespaian helped to repair the damage of the civil wars to Rome. He had two temples built, the temple of Peace and the temple to the Deified Claudius. In 80 he commissioned the construction of the Colosseum, which was completed by the next emperor, Titus, after his death. It was built with the proceedings from the spoils of war of the capture of Jerusalem. In 75 he had a colossal statue begun by Nero erected by the Colosseum. It was originally a statue of Nero , Vespasian had it modified into a statue of the god sol (Sun) by adding the sun-ray crown of this god to it. He renamed it Colossus Solis. In 78 Vespasian sent the general Agricola to conquer the north of England. Agricola also invaded into Scotland. Vespasian debased the denarius(a coin), reducing the silver purity from 93.5% to 90%.

Vespasian was emperor for only ten years (69-79 AD). Before he became emperor, he participated in the invasion of Britannia in 43 AD with his legion, the II Augusta. He was sent to expand into the southwest. He took the modern counties of Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

In 66 AD, Vespasian was put in charge of the suppression the Jewish revolt in Judaea (the First Roman-Jewish War (63-73 BC) with two legions, eight cavalry squadrons and ten auxiliary cohorts. His son Titus joined him from Alexandria with another legion. He took Yodfat and destroyed Jericho. He was against besieging Jerusalem because he thought it would cost too many Roman lives and returned to Rome. It was Titus who besieged and took Jerusalem.

Vespasian became emperor in 69 through the support of several legions gave him against a usurper emperor during the civil wars of that year. He helped to rebuild Rome after the civil wars. He built the temple of Peace and the temple to the Deified Claudius. In 70 AD he began the construction of the Colosseum, which was completed by his son Titus in 80 AD. The Colosseum was financed with the spoils of the First Roman-Jewish War and built by Jewish slaves. Vespasian was benign in dealing with political opposition.

75 AD he built the Temple of Peace which was a semi-circular hall with porticos in form of it which formed a square as a garden, with pools and pedestals for statues. Despite not actually being a forum, later it was known as the Forum of Peace. In the same year he erected a colossal statue of Apollo, begun under Nero

In 77 Vespasian made Agricola governor of Britannia and got him to complete the conquest of this island. He reached as far as Scotland.

Under Vespasian's rule Propaganda increased. New buildings had inscriptions praising him and condemning previous emperors. The works of historians had to be approved by him. This ensured that there would be no bias against him. Despite this, he was quite lenient towards political opposition and he was a frank man. He was a patron of men of letters and rhetors (teachers), but he distrusted philosophers. He was philanthropic to the people.
