A medieval drawbridge was a movable bridge that was usually the way into a castle. The drawbridges were typically made of wood, were heavy, had hinged sides, and went across the ditch or moat that surrounded the castle.

They were important because they could keep out enemies and welcome in friendly faces. Under a drawbridge is water, or a moat. If you put the drawbridge down, then you would let people in. If you closed it up, people couldn't get in because of the moat that surrounds the castle. So basically, a drawbridge is like a door, keeping enemies from coming in and letting who you choose enter.
