The Roman apron could be two things. A cook could use a piece of cloth tied to his waist to wipe off his hands during the food prep process. The more common use of an apron was that of a Roman soldier. His "apron" was a group of anywhere from one to nine straps which were studded ,had decorative metal terminals, and hung from the front of a man's belt. A Roman soldier's belt was generally decorative and ornate (sometimes he wore two of them). The belt was his status symbol which separated him from the civilians, and a decorative apron was part of it. It served no defensive purpose.

∙ 11y agoThe Roman soldier did not wear an apron. He wore a tunic under his armour. However the term "apron" was not a piece of protective gear, it was an attachment to a soldier's belt. A soldier's belt was a status symbol. It separated him from the civilians and most soldier's belts were highly decorated and had an apron which was formed by several leather straps which ended in a metal pendant and were decorated with rows of disks. This apron was a man's "brag book" as a soldier. It served no military purpose and the clinking leather strips often had to be would up to silence them in certain marching situations which needed silence.
