The medieval times were the Middle Ages. The two mean the same thing. The Middle Ages was a period from about the 5th century (476 is one date given) to the the middle of the 15th century (1453 and 1492 are commonly given). It began with the fall of the West Roman Empire, which fell rather slowly, and lasted until the beginning of modern times. It included a number of divisions, and also included about half of the Renaissance.
The period in human history in Europe, often called the Middle Ages, and also medieval times, began in the era following the end of the ancient Roman empire in the West. Europe was in a period of kings ruling different parts of the continent with no clear boundaries that later followed. It was a time of knights, Crusades, and dominance in religion by the Vatican and Catholicism.

Medieval means, literally, time in between, or middle ages. It is the time which came between the supposedly more literate and enlightened Roman Empire and the more literate and enlightened Renaissance. The dates are roughly 476 to 1453.

It was the time after the Roman empire ruled. When this massive empire fell to invaders, in an already declining civilization, Europe was up for grabs by any one. Soon, small kingdoms formed out of the dark age tribes. In 800 A.D. Charlemagne was officially crowned king of the Frankish kingdom.(although he was in control before) He expanded his borders to north Italy and other areas across Europe. This place became The Holy Roman empire. Although not Roman it was thought to be strong and vast such as the Romans. Other places were united to. Around 900 A.D., the high middle ages replaced the early and time of prosperity was brought to the upper class. To understand this you must understand the basic hierarchy. In 1066,Duke of Normandy, France, defeated the Saxons,an ex-Germanic tribe in England,at the historic battle of Hastings. He introduced a French system to England known as Feudalism. Feudalism had peasants who worked for land and paid taxes of food to their landlord. The landlord was a vassal,or worker, to his king while obeying him and fighting for him. The king gave land to the knights for loyalty, and if one of the two higher positions broke this, the other could desert. There could be many more vassals with in, but that's all of the basic concepts. With this introduced to England it change England forever. Even with united empires, chaos from the vikings, a mobile homeless, Scandinavian people, would cause chaos, even to priest for the viking were pagan. Later events, about the 1350's, changed the world forever. Around the start of the late middle ages, a deadly plague swept in from the far east. The black death had arrived. Being several diseases or combinations of diseases, the black death was likely the Bubonic Plague. This disease could kill in a day and was thought to kill of, possibly, 1/3 of Europe's populace. Thinking it was a sign of the end, monk's attempted to repent by hitting themselves with boards. Although it did appear several times later,no version was this strong. Finally, the medieval period ended at about 1450. After that changes occurred like true geniuses, the printing ess(movable type),and religious reformations, making new forms of Christians like Lutherans and present day catholics. Medieval-a Latin word describing the middle ages, which were between the ancient and modern world.

Note: Medieval period is also referred to as the Gothic Period.

Most historians put the Middle Ages in the 5th through 15th centuries.

Some historians call the first part of this the Dark Ages, and put the Middle Ages in the 11th through 15th centuries. This usage is probably declining.
