A bard was an interesting type. He was the newspaper, gossip monger, and storyteller of his time. Never very wealthy and often made fun of by others. The biggest advantage was in a world of stagnant classes he was fairly free to move around. Stories like Robin Hood come from men who were bards. Most people were glad to see one, gave them a bit of food, some straw to sleep on for a story.

In medieval British and Gaelic culture a storyteller or poet would have been called a "bard". The bard would have been supported by a patron, a nobleman or lord, and would have told stories that the patron wished to hear. Minstrel is also a name for medieval storytellers, who would tell stories through musical lyrics.
Shakespeare is known as "the Bard" because "bard" was a term used in medieval times to refer to a poet and storyteller. Shakespeare's works, particularly his plays and sonnets, are revered for their poetic language and storytelling, hence the association with the title "bard."
