The Middle Ages Ended 1500 A.D.

-----

Though 1453 is the most commonly used date for the end of the Middle Ages, different historians give different dates. Included among them are the following:

  • 1401, when the contract for the north doors in the Florence Baptistery was awarded. This date is sometimes used in Italy.
  • Some time around 1440 to 1455, varying by author, the date Gutenberg invented movable type.
  • 1453, when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks and the Hundred Years' War ended. This is clearly the most commonly used.
  • 1485, the date of the Battle of Bosworth Field, which ended the Wars of the Roses and established the Tudor dynasty. This date is often used in the UK.
  • 1492, the date Columbus sailed and Grenada fell to the Spanish, ending Muslim governments in Spain.
  • 1516, the date of the death of King Ferdinand II of Spain. This date is commonly used in Spain.

I have also seen 1517, the date Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Theses, suggested, along with other dates.

Some historians resolve the issue by refusing to give a date, instead using the 15th century as a general time of the end of the Middle Ages. The year 1500 is also convenient, as it marks the end of a century.
