Coopers made barrels, buckets, and other similar objects. They normally had workshops that were rather large, and so they did not travel to do their work and lived nearby. Coopers' work was used on manors and farms, vineyards, and in towns, where brewers made beer. So the coopers could have lived in any villages, towns, cities or monasteries.

Coopers were probably mostly independent business owners or employed craftsmen. Their homes would have been a bit better than an ordinary serf's cottage, and rather like those of tailors, bakers, millers, carpenters, and masons.

A cooper was, and still is, a person who made barrels.

Barrels were used to store and ship everything. We still use this term today with some items. When people refer to oil they talk about "barrels of oil" in a ship. The oil isn't in barrels today but the measurement is still used.

Barrels have lost their importance in history but at one time the man who made them had a pretty good business.
