The Romans grew much of their own food, but they got a lot of their grain supply from Egypt, meaning that whoever had control of Egypt had control of food in Rome. The Romans used the Egyptian peasants as a work force, and used them to ensure that they had enough food to feed themselves first.

The largest part of the Roman diet was bread. The vast majority of wheat to make the bread came from Egypt. The senators and business people who controlled the raising and transportation of grain were among the wealthiest in the empire.
